3 Key Auto Shop Tools that Auto Technicians Swear By

Part of preparing for an auto mechanic career involves getting the proper tools, as well as learning how to use them. There are plenty of must-haves for any aspiring mechanic, who will be putting in some hard work building up their toolkit. Pry bars, ratchet and socket sets, code readers, and even flashlights are all an important part of preparing for this fun career path. However, that small list is just the tip of the iceberg.

At ATC Montreal, you’ll get hands-on training on how to service different vehicles. You’ll learn how to service wheels, tires, and hubs and bearings. You’ll also learn how to service suspension systems, ignitions systems, and much more. But without the right tools at your disposal, your job would be more difficult—if not flat out impossible.

So, while there are many tools that you’ll be using throughout your training and career, we’re here to highlight three key staples that you will keep grabbing again and again.

1. Auto Technicians Use Different Types of Hammers

This is a bit of a basic tool, but it’s one of the most essential tools used in an auto shop. Automotive technicians like to use hammers to remove various car parts that get stuck because of rust, grease, and dirt buildup. They can come in handy when you need to remove ball joints with a nice blow, for example. Many auto technicians use a ball-peen hammer when a precise blow on metal fabrics is required. Also, another hammer used to deliver a blow (but without the risk of accidentally causing any damage) is a soft-blow hammer or mallet. This type of hammer is usually used for engine repair work.

2. Tighten Or Loosen Those Nuts and Bolts Using Wrenches

Wrenches are another key tool you’ll be using after you complete automotive school. Wrenches come in handy when tightening or loosening the nuts and bolts of any vehicle you’re repairing. Wrenches come in different sizes and types. You’ll come across combination wrenches that come with an enclosed wrench on one of its ends and an open wrench on the other. Another widely used wrench is the adjustable wrench, which is a great option for loosening or tightening nuts and bolts because it offers the option of adjusting its jagged jaws to the desired size and grip you need. You’ll also notice automotive technicians using specific types of wrenches for specific car repairs. For instance, loosening or tightening spark plugs requires a spark plug wrench, while a cross-armed lug wrench is specifically used for tires.

3. Make Use of Pliers

When it comes to getting into the nitty-gritty stuff when repairing customer vehicles, pliers are a key tool in your automotive repair kit. You can use pliers to grab certain parts or objects in tight spaces, adjust parts, and even cut wires. When you have to manipulate things in tight spaces, needle-nose pliers will do the job for you. You’ll also find that groove-lock pliers will come in handy when you need to turn and hold bolts and nuts, or firmly grip irregularly shaped objects. Also, locking pliers provide automotive technicians with a firm grip when attempting to clamp down using minimal effort.
