Students in mechanic programs get to work on all sorts of vehicles, from regular SUVs to some of the flashier models. Working in an auto repair garage, you’ll find SUVs, coupes, sports cars and, perhaps even a few supercar sedans. One thing you’ll discover is that these days, more and more average-sized cars are able to do something that was once only in the realm of the supercar: accelerate quickly.
The time it takes a sedan to jump from 0 right up to 60 miles per hour has been getting shorter and shorter, at least with certain models. Here are five of the fastest accelerating sedans:
Rolls-Royce Ghost V-Specification
The Rolls-Royce Ghost isn’t a small sedan, in fact it’s one of the largest luxury vehicles you can buy! Weighing 6,482 pounds, this Rolls-Royce’s 4.8 second jump from 0-60 is more than impressive, it’s borderline unbelievable. What makes this feat possible is the Ghost’s 6.6 liter V12 engine which gives 575 pound-feet of torque.
Cadillac CTS-V
This vehicle has a 6.2 litre V8 engine that produces an incredible 556 horsepower. It can go from 0-60 in just 3.9 seconds. It’s priced in the $60,000 range, but since it’s a Cadillac, you’re also paying for all the luxury features that are synonymous with the brand. An interesting note for automotive service technicians is that this car can go back to 0 pretty quickly too, because Cadillac gave it large Brembo brakes.
Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG S
With a 5.5 litre twin turbo V8 engine which can produce 577 horsepower, the Mercedez-Benz E 63 AMG S supercar can go from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds. It’s not the largest sedan, but it is a Mercedes, so it’s definitely one of the nicer ones out there. Painted in a brilliant metallic blue, this car is sure to garner attention no matter what speed it’s going at.
Tesla Model S P85D
A few months ago, we wrote about Tesla’s Insane Mode. Turns out that the mode was “insane” enough to land the car that houses it, the Model S P85D, a spot on this list. Like the Rolls-Royce, it isn’t a small sedan by any means. But thanks to the wonders of electricity and the 864 lb-ft of torque this car produces, this Tesla can go from 0-60 in just 3.2 seconds. It also has 691 horsepower and looks real nice too.
2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
The Dodge Charger is known for its powerful speed, and this newest addition to the Charger family is no exception. The SRT Hellcat sports an incredible 707 horsepower engine, has a 204 mph top speed, and can go from 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds. At the time of its release, this 2015 Charger model was ranked the most powerful sedan on the road. Of course, being a Dodge vehicle, it certainly doesn’t lack any style either.
Do you see yourself in an automotive career where you can work on these types of fast acceleration vehicles?
