The Tesla Gigafactory is a massive building that is currently under construction in Nevada for the purpose of manufacturing Tesla batteries. Carmaker Tesla Motors has been expanding quickly for almost a decade with its all-electric vehicles and every single Tesla automobile is powered exclusively by electric battery.
With demand for their cars on the rise, Tesla is approaching the point of not being able to reach its own battery demand—enter the gigafactory. The gigafactory is part of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s plan to remake the transportation world.
Read on to discover what Musk has in store for the future with help of the new ‘gigafactory.’
Pros In Auto Mechanic Careers Will Likely See More Teslas In The Future
With Tesla stores, service stations, and charging stations cropping up across the country, students completing their auto mechanic training in Montreal might already be well aware that Tesla plans to expand its operations. In order to accomplish that goal, producing affordable batteries efficiently is a must, which is why the carmaker has been focusing efforts on the new gigafactory.
The mega factory is being built with the help of Panasonic Chairman and CEO Joe Taylor, who expects Tesla to be producing 500,000 cars by the year 2020. Considering that Tesla delivered just 50,000 cars in 2015, this prediction is lofty to say the least. But if it is achieved, the need for new batteries will be huge. Those with an auto mechanic career might know that Tesla sales have been steadily increasing. In fact, the automaker just received 350,000 pre-orders for the new Model 3! So whether that 500,000 goal is met or not, car mechanics will likely be seeing more Teslas coming soon—and the new ‘gigafactory’ will help supply all the batteries for them.
Students in Auto Mechanic Training Should Check Out The Gigafactory Plant
Panasonic and Tesla are building the gigafactory together in Nevada. Panasonic has gone on record stating that it will be investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the plant. The plant is expected to cut the costs of producing Tesla batteries by 30 per cent, potentially reducing the price tag on future Tesla cars.
Once completed, the factory will be the largest factory in the world and the biggest building in the world in terms of its footprint. It’s estimated that the factory will take up 10 million square feet of space and employ approximately 6,500 workers. Already, the factory is 14 per cent complete and has started to produce batteries for homes and businesses. When finished, the company claims that “the gigafactory will produce more lithium ion cells than all of the world’s combined output in 2013.”
Auto Mechanic Training Students Might Want to Take a Look at Tesla’s Robots
To help the factory stay efficient and produce batteries quickly, a huge portion of Tesla’s factory will be run using robots. Robot arms will be used to assemble batteries and “automated guided vehicles” (AGV) will be used to move parts around the factory floor completely autonomously. In addition, the whole plant will be highly automated and powered by renewable solar power energy.
With this efficient new gigafactory pumping out more and more batteries, it looks like students in auto mechanic training might soon see even more Teslas on the streets.
