Auto Painting Trends: Which Car Colours Will You See Most in 2016?

automotive careers
Whether a customer is buying a new car or repainting a current one, selecting a paint colour is one of the most personal aspects of owning a vehicle. Some people choose a colour based on how easy it is to keep clean, others want their car to reflect their personality. Whatever the case may be, there are a lot of factors that car-owners and buyers tend to consider when selecting a colour.

Sometimes, customers select a colour based on what is trending at the moment because they want their vehicle to look modern. If you want to launch a career in auto painting, keeping up with car colour trends will provide you with an understanding of what’s in-demand. Additionally, auto body shops can mix paints to create whichever colour they want, so you’ll have no problem catering to the changing needs of your client-base.

Here’s a quick look at some of the most popular car colours for 2016.

Auto Painting Pros Know that Monochrome Colours Will Remain Popular

It’s no secret that monochrome colours like black, white and silver are among the most dominant car colours in the industry. You may have noticed that car manufacturers and paint suppliers sometimes paint cars in slight variations of basic monochrome colours, such as matte black, pearlescent white and charcoal. The mixing of tones and coats with these popular colours is expected to continue this year, so expect to see a lot of matte monochromes, high-gloss blacks and primer-toned greys once you graduate from auto body training.

Red will Make a Comeback in the Auto Painting Sector This Year

While monochromatic blacks, whites, and silvers have steadily remained a popular choice, red has had its ups and downs over the years. Red draws a lot of attention and is usually associated with sportier models. For example, Ferrari’s own signature colour ‘Rosso Corsa’ is considered one of the boldest and most recognizable shades of red on the road.

In 2015, red was the fourth most popular colour choice among new car buyers in North America. In fact, research has shown that approximately 10 per cent of vehicles bought were in shades of red. Professionals in automotive careers know that black was last year’s top choice with 19 per cent of vehicles being sold in this shade. While red has yet to reach the same level of popularity as the colour black, there has been an increase in the sale of red cars and this trend has continued to progress since the start of 2016.

Blue Was Recently Named the Auto Painting Colour of the Year

Each year, an automotive paint company called Axalta Coating Systems releases a report that shows the preferences in colour choices for both customers and auto manufacturers. The company recently announced that ‘brilliant blue’ was named colour of the year for 2016. Brilliant blue is a darker blue accented by turquoise that’s designed to both relax and excite the mind.

Of course, this title in no way means that we should expect to see blue cars on every street corner. However, it does mean that we’ll be seeing an increase in new models being released in this colour. Blue is currently the sixth most popular car colour in North America, accounting for 8 per cent of passenger vehicles on the road.
