Why Grads of Automotive Courses Are Impressed by the Semi-Autonomous 2018 Cadillac CT6
Recently added to Cadillac’s sedan family, the 2018 Cadillac CT6 is a game changer. With this semi-autonomous vehicle, the hallmark American car brand is seamlessly rolling into the future of human propulsion. What does this future look like? It’s luxurious, intelligent, and meticulously designed. Needless to say, car aficionados are excited. In fact, the Automobile Journalists Association even named it the best new technology of 2018.
What does it do and how does it work? Keep reading to find out.
Grads of Automotive Courses Find the Super Cruise Feature Remarkable
Thanks to the new Super Cruise feature, those who get to sit behind the wheel of the 2018 Cadillac CT6 will experience driving as they never have before. This is because it actually allows you to take your hands off the wheel and let the car drive itself! There is a small caveat that to do this, drivers need to be on a divided highway, but grads of automotive courses know this is still a spectacular feat in the world of auto technology.
So what’s the secret behind how it works? In its trunk, the car has a hard drive with high precision LiDAR map data for every divided highway in North America. This precious data provides the semi-autonomous driving system with the information it needs to keep the car on the road.
To deal with traffic, cameras and radar monitor what’s in front of the car, looking up to 2.5 kilometers ahead. If traffic is detected, the intelligent system adjusts the vehicle’s speed as needed.
Infrared Tech Monitors the Driver at All Times
It’s not just what’s out in front of the car that gets monitored, but what goes on inside as well. The CT6 monitors the driver too. This helps the smart system make sure the driver remains alert and ready to take control of the car if needed.
An infrared camera and six infrared emitters sit on top of the steering wheel column, watching the driver’s eyes and the direction their head is facing. If the system deems that the driver’s eyes have been closed, or that they have been turned away for too long, the car prompts the driver to take back control through a series of light, sound, and vibration alerts. In case driver control is not resumed, the car comes to a stop and puts on its emergency lights.
The Revolutionary Vehicle Grants Powerful Performance Capabilities
Besides cool semi-autonomous driving technology, the 2018 Cadillac CT6 packs some pretty great performance capabilities. The car is equipped with all-wheel-drive and its automatic transmission uses eight speeds. Of the three engine options available, the one professionals with automotive mechanic training might find the most compelling is the 3.0L V6 turbo-charged engine, which offers 404 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. There will also be a plug-in hybrid option that offers an electric-only range of up to 50 kilometres.
More Cool Tech and Massage Seats? Yes Please
The neat tech on this piece of sci-fi-made-reality includes features like night vision and an HD-streaming backup camera with its own lens washer. In addition, the CT6 also comes with magnetic ride control, which uses electromagnets and magnetic fluid to ensure that passengers constantly enjoy nothing but a soft and comfortable ride. This comfort is brought to the next level with climate control for each leather seat and 15 massage settings per seat. Granted, the massage settings are an add-on option, but it’s still another decadent flourish for an already impressive car.
