Always Follow the Lead! How Our Automotive School Fosters Strong Auto Repair Instincts
Every experienced mechanic knows that troubleshooting car repairs is as much about instinct as it is about technical skills. At our automotive school, we believe in empowering our students with the foundational principles that sharpen their instincts and guide them in making confident, informed decisions during complex repairs.
Hugo Castillo, one of our graduates, recently put this training to the test. His story highlights how one of our core teachings—“always follow the lead”—helped him to navigate a challenging repair situation.
A Challenging Call
Hugo received a call from a friend whose 2018 Hyundai Tucson had started acting erratically. The friend needed urgent help, and Hugo, with tools in hand, showed up ready to diagnose the issue. “I followed protocol: arrived on time, dressed, prepared,” Hugo explained.
His initial visual inspection revealed no obvious problems—no leaks, fluids were fine, no broken components, and belts were in good shape. He turned the key and noticed the computer was connected. But when he started the car, the Check Engine light began flashing—a sign that something was seriously wrong.
“I had never seen a flashing Check Engine light before,” Hugo admitted. “My experience as a car mechanic is still limited, but my training kicked in. I remembered what the school teaches: no matter what, follow the lead.”

Applying ATC’s Teachings
Hugo connected his scanner to the car and waited for it to warm up to operating temperature. In the meantime, he used a stethoscope to listen closely to the engine and injectors, a skill he’d honed during his training at our automotive school.
The scanner returned a P1326 code, pointing to a knock sensor issue. This diagnosis suggested a potentially serious and costly engine problem. “It was heartbreaking to tell my friend this news,” Hugo shared. “It was also compromising because, with my limited experience, I wasn’t sure if I was right.”
Despite his doubts, Hugo relied on his training and advised his friend to seek a second opinion from a knowledgeable mechanic. He then took it upon himself to research the issue further, consulting repair manuals, engine schematics, and online resources.

The Breakthrough
Hugo’s persistence paid off. His research revealed that Hyundai had issued a recall for the exact symptoms and code he had diagnosed. The recall covered repairs and, in some cases, even full engine replacements.
“Bingo!” Hugo said triumphantly. “It’s too early to celebrate, but it’s the right path. I made the right calls, and it’s all thanks in huge part to the school for teaching me this.”
