Now that 2018 is drawing to a close, it’s time for that annual tradition: coming up with New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, far too often when we create resolutions we don’t actually come up with a plan for turning them into reality. Don’t let that be the case for you this time around! If switching careers is one of your New Year’s resolutions, don’t just dream about how much you would love a new job. Instead, make it happen!

Here are the first steps you can take to make 2019 the year you finally realize your dream of pursuing the career you’ve always wanted.

Do What You’re Passionate About

Far too often we think that a career has to feel like a grind, whereas the things we actually enjoy are only for evenings and weekends. But the things you’re really good at—and which can be turned into a career—are probably the things you like doing.

If working on cars is what you love doing during your free time, why not turn it into a career?
If working on cars is what you love doing during your free time, why not turn it into a career?

For example, if you love everything about cars, a career in the field could be a really great fit. Whether you eagerly follow the latest automotive news, or love the satisfaction you feel when tinkering around on your own car at home, you could love working as a mechanic.

Research How to Get an Automotive Career

Often it can be tempting to put aside pursuing a dream. It can be tempting to put things off for a few months, or decide that you’ll begin your training once it’s the right time. Instead, start researching what specific jobs in the automotive sector interest you. If you love popping open the hood of a car and figuring out how it runs, then a job as an auto mechanic may be a great fit. Get online and find out what you need to become a mechanic, such as the training requirements and the number of apprenticeship hours that must be completed. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to people who are already working as mechanics. Ask them how they got started and what advice they can give you.

Now Make Your Resolution a Reality by Applying for Auto Mechanic Courses

Now that you know what you want to do and how to do it, it’s time to find a school that offers the courses you need to get started. When you’re researching auto mechanic courses, you’ll need to consider whether the school looks like a good fit for you. Come up with some questions to determine which school is best, such as: Does it offer plenty of hands-on training? Will you be able to complete the theory component of the course online (this is especially important if you’re going to be working while studying)? And is the school confident enough in their program that they can offer testimonials from past students? The answers to these questions will give you a good idea about whether that school is going to give you the training you need to pursue your new career.
