How Our Auto Mechanic Program Supports Students Amidst Challenges
At ATC, we understand that pursuing a career after completing an auto mechanic program comes with its fair share of challenges. Recently, we had the privilege to sit down with David Palombi, whose journey to the automotive industry was full of twists and turns.
He shared with us: “My journey to ATC is quite different. It’s an up-and-down roller coaster. I started as a network administrator. I did that for 26 years. Unfortunately, COVID happened.”
David also had a successful dance studio that flooded five times, leaving him wondering, “What do I do now?”
David explains further: “Back in high school, many years ago, I was deciding between automotive and IT. My high school didn’t have automotive, so naturally, I followed the IT route. Now, I’m heading over to automotive. I came to ATC, graduated at the top of my class, did the night school program, worked during the day at Hyundai, and soon I’ll be writing my license.”
Though he is undoubtedly one of our proud success stories, David’s journey was challenging.

Mastering the Technical Aspects of Auto Mechanics
A key challenge for students is mastering the technical aspects of the trade, from understanding the intricacies of engine repair to staying current with advancements in automotive technology.
David aptly describes in our discussion, “You’re the car doctor. Doctors need to diagnose and figure out what’s going on with the car. You need to build those skills, and ATC gave me those fundamental skills.”
Our auto mechanic program prioritizes practical, hands-on learning experiences that allow students to apply their classroom knowledge in real-world situations, and our facilities provide a simulated work environment. Hence, students gain confidence in diagnosing and repairing issues in automobiles, light trucks, and other vehicles.
We also stay at the forefront of emerging automotive technologies, ensuring our students are well-versed in the latest advancements, such as electric and hybrid vehicles.
Rigorous but Rewarding Path to Certification Through Auto Mechanic Training
The path to becoming a certified auto mechanic in Ontario is rigorous but also incredibly rewarding. Our Auto Mechanic Training Program in Toronto is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in a competitive field.
The program is divided into three parts, comprising 240 hours of classroom-based training. However, the journey doesn’t end there—students must also complete 6,000 workplace hours and pass written exams and tasks, which David is working towards now.
The requirements for those aspiring to achieve the prestigious Red Seal Certification are even more demanding. They need 9,720 hours of documented work experience to earn the ability to work in any province or territory in Canada.
Opportunities for Career Advancement
We offer a wide array of opportunities for occupational advancement for students looking to build their careers even further. Our auto mechanic program prepares students for entry-level roles such as lube, maintenance, and brake specialists. Still, it also provides the foundational skills to pursue more specialized positions.
With additional experience and training, graduates can move into roles such as engine technicians, transmission specialists, and even service managers.
David has experience in the dealership world but understands all the opportunities that await him. “There’s a lot more! There’s Nascar, Mopar, and classic cars. I go to a lot of classic car meet-ups… it’s inspiring.” Like David, you have plenty to look forward to in the automotive industry.
