Want to Become a Mechanic? Start Practicing on Your Car!

If you want to become a mechanic, the best way to start is by gaining hands-on experience—and what better place to begin than with your own car? Joseph Walsh, a dedicated student at ATC Toronto, shared how working on his vehicle became a crucial first step toward achieving his dream.

Joe began with a career change after years in a physically demanding job. “I was looking for a career change because I was into the interlocking,” he explained. Some online research led him to ATC, where he pursued auto mechanic training to build a career around his passion for cars.

A Passion That Starts at Home

Working on cars has always been a practical necessity and a passion for Joe. “When you can’t afford to go get your car fixed, well, you’re going to have to do it yourself, right? So, yeah, I always worked on my own vehicles. I like working on cars. It’s just like a peace of mind. It gets me outside, you know, so that was my next choice in my career.”

Hands-On Training at ATC

One of Joe’s favourite parts of the auto mechanic training at ATC is the ability to work on real vehicles, including his own. “The fact that we’re able to bring our own vehicles in, work at the shop, do whatever we need to do,” he said.

He shared that learning to repair different types of vehicles, brought in by classmates, has been invaluable. “Everybody here has a multiple selection of vehicles, so you get to learn on everybody else’s vehicles.”

Learning from Experts

Another highlight of Joe’s experience has been learning from experienced instructors who provide detailed insights and guidance. “They have a lot to say. They really go thoroughly through the course. I got a lot more information out of it, for sure,” Joe said. He noted how the program helped him correct some misconceptions and develop a deeper understanding of mechanics. “It corrected my mind a little bit more and gave me a better understanding of everything.”

Joe shared how the program supported him in securing employment. “They help you through the process of the school, and they help you get a job in the field. They got me a job at Active Green and Ross, and I work for them… It’s great. I love it.”
