In Conversation With Automotive Technician Student Zoey Benoit: Why Experienced Instructors Matter

For many students, the path to becoming an automotive technician is driven by a fascination with cars and a desire for hands-on work. Zoey Benoit’s journey was no different. While her route into the automotive world wasn’t direct, it was transformative, leading her to the Automotive Training Centre (ATC) in Cambridge.

We sat down with Zoey to discuss her experience, how ATC’s unique approach shaped her, and why having instructors with real-world experience is key. Her story shows how guidance can turn passion into a thriving career.

Her Journey to Becoming an Automotive Technician

“I have been at the Automotive Training Centre for about nine months now, so I’m very close to the end of my journey,” Zoey begins, reflecting on her time at ATC Cambridge. Like many students, her path into the automotive field wasn’t straight.

She shares how she transitioned from a more traditional academic background to pursuing a hands-on career. “I didn’t think I’d be getting into automotive repair. It was a dream a little bit ago in high school,” she admits before recounting how she finished her first degree and decided to follow her passion for working in the trades.

“I went, you know what I want to do? I want to do something in the trades. I want to be an automotive technician.” She asked herself, “ What’s the best option possible?” Her answer was ATC.

The Importance of Hands-On Learning

Zoey’s fascination with cars initially drew her to the industry, and the hands-on learning at ATC allowed her to immerse herself fully in that passion. “With the Automotive Training Centre, we are actually 50% in the shop and 50% in the classroom,” Zoey explains. The opportunity to get hands-on experience has been crucial in preparing her for the workforce.

“We’re always hands-on. We always have something new to do. We were working on engines. We get to take apart a whole engine…” Zoey confirmed that there’s never the same thing twice, highlighting the dynamic nature of the training.

For Zoey, this has made all the difference. “I find it is so important because the more engaged they are with you, the more you’re engaged with them,” she reflects.

Her instructor, Rick, has been particularly impactful. “He’s amazing. He’s always putting his best foot forward and creating such an amazing environment for us,” she says, crediting his dedication and experience for helping her stay motivated and engaged.

As Zoey approaches the end of her program, she feels well-prepared to enter the automotive workforce. “Absolutely. Always,” she responds confidently when asked if she feels ready for the workforce. And while she’s excited about the possibilities, her dream is to “open up [her] own shop.” With the support of experienced instructors like Rick and the comprehensive training she’s received at ATC, it’s clear that Zoey is on the path to success.
